| Abstract | The aim of this article is to describe Hong Kong's multilingual society, particularly by focusing on the present status of Cantonese in the colony. This study concentrates on the factors involved in language shift, and presents an attempt to predict what may happen with regard to Cantonese, Putonghua and English in Hong Kong after 1997. |
