Abstract | In mid-September 1996, China was deeply involved in a diplomatic row with Japan following actions by several Japanese right-wing groups to repair a typhoon-damaged lighthouse which had been erected by the country's Sennin She (Youth Group) on Diaoyu Island, and the raising there of a wooden plaque and the Japanese flag. The actions provoked strong protests by non-governmental groups on the mainland, in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Protests were held daily, particularly in Hong Kong, where a quarter of a century ago Hong Kong youths took the lead in protesting against Japan when the Diaoyu archipelago was handed over to the Japanese by the Americans along with the Ryukyu Islands. |
