AbstractAt 11 p.m. on September 30 1996, a news show was in 7495 kilohertz. The top story featured two Chinese dissidents who had hard words for the Communist Party's Central Committee and Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang. This channel is Radio Free Asia which was only into its second broadcast and China's worst fears seemed confirmed. Foreign Ministry spokesman Shen Guofang said that the information disseminated by the station is essentially anti-China. Beijing is bound to react strongly. Radio Free Asia plans to expand its broadcasts to five-and-a-half hours a day and begin transmitting to Tibet. But China isn't the only target. Eventually, listeners in Myanmar, North Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos will be able to receive America's take on Asia.
