Article TitleNever a day of sunshine : a dark account of prison life in Mao's China / Catherine Shepherd.

AbstractThis article reviews on two books, of which, Zhang Xianliang's "My Bodhi Tree" was based on his diary written during his days in the northern China reform camp. The sequel covers the last half of 1960, a difficult time in Chinese history as millions of people starved to death in the famine that followed Mao Zedong's Great Leap Forward. This book raises the question of whether life for many was more brutal inside or outside a prison camp.
