AbstractIn order to improve quality of nursing service, it is essential to have an in-depth understanding of the humanistic care. Qualitative research methods include ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology and case study can be employed to achieve this purpose. Each of these research method constitutes its characteristics in revealing social context, life experience and cultural issues from different perspectives. In this article, an overview of the various types of qualitative research methods and their contributions to nursing will be discussed. It is hoped that nurses will have a better understanding about these characteristics, their contributions to research in nursing and can make the best use of these in the development of nursing profession.
