| Abstract | China has become a different place since Mao Zedong's death, far from the rigid, commual society he sought to construct. And yet in a country in which the focus on economic efficiency is displacing the Maoist mania for equality, the Great Helmsman's personal popularity has risen beyond even what he might have imagined. Almost exactly 20 years after his demise, the awesome ghost of Mao lives on. This article looks at how the Maoist mania extends to the Chinese people's everyday lives, to the fashion trend and to memorabilia and commerical products of all sorts. |
