Abstract | Many cultures look back on their Bronze Age with shame. Not so in China. If the Olympic Games were ever to be held in Beijing, the hero standing on the highest part of the podium would not be wearing gold or silver. Given China's reverence of the past, it is no surprise that the formative bronze period has fixed itself in the public consciousness as the time when the Middle Kingdom proved its centrality to the universe. Jades may be more sensual; ceramics may be more colourful - but bronzes are more Chinese. |
