AbstractAnnual fees for degree-level university students are set to rise by 21.5 per cent in 1997, from $30,750 to $37,350. In succeeding years, fees will continue to climb to about $43,100 in 1997-98, and by the academic year 1999-2000, they will have reached $51,650, according to government plans. By then, annual student tuition fees will be more than triple the rate in 1993-94. In this article, Legislative Council (Legco) representative for the education constitutency, the Secretary for Education and Manpower, President of the City University Students' Union, Representative of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, the Vice Chancellor-designate of the Chinese University, Acting Director of Student Affairs at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Principal Assistant Secretary for Education and Manpower give their opinion on the issue.
