AbstractThe European Union's (EU) textile and clothing industry plans to strengthen its competitive position vis-a-vis Asia by means of offshore production in Eastern Europe, where wages are low and productivity high. It has also concluded an agreement with Turkey, which has achieved phenomenal growth in its exports of clothing to Germany and other EU countries. Furthermore China's exports have recently been severely restricted by quotas either unilateral or bilateral. Will these developments undermine Asia's trading position in this field? A discussion between Dr Konrad Neundorfer, Delegate-General of the Brussels-based Foreign Trade Association, and Kayser Sung, Editor-in-Chief of Textile Asia, in a working session held in Hong Kong on 25 September 1995 is reported in this article.
