AbstractThe politics, vast scale, huge cost and sheer romance of the whole project apart, the green light for Hong Kong's new Chek Lap Kok airport and its mammoth infrastructure has been the salvation of the local construction and steel industries - both of which had feared major cutbacks due to the housing sector slowdown. In addition to construction of the airport's two runways, 490,000 square meters passenger terminal and a cargo-handling building the size of three soccer pitches, nine other major Airport Core Programme works now under way have in turn nurtured spin-off developments that will keep the men in hard hats and their industries more than gainfully employed well into the next century.
