AbstractFemale workers in cotton mills in China are required to operate the spindles and considered dispensable front-line staff, so even pregnant workers have to work night shifts. But after the announcement of the new Labour Law on 1 February 1995, the six state-run cotton mills in Zhengzhou city in Henan province has adopted a new system of exempting pregnant workers from night shifts.
