Abstract | Beijing is home to some 11 million people. As in most of China's major urban centres, natural population increase has been boosted by the flow of thousands of peasants from the provinces willing to work for low wages on construction sites and in factories. Along with increasing industrialization, that puts pressure on basic 2.3 million cubic meters of industrial and domestic sewage, most of which is discharged untreated into Beijing's two major rivers, the Tonghui and the Liangshui. |
