Abstract | China and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) member countries formally acknowledged on 20 December 1994 that the negotiations for China's return to the GATT, and thus accession to the World Trade Organisation, could not be concluded for the moment. However in an apparent retreat from previous declarations that China would refuse to continue talking after 1 January 1995, Long Yongtu, the chief Chinese negotiator and Deputy Vice-Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Trade & Economic Cooperation, said that China would be willing to do so, but it will maintain its offers on the table and its position on the key issues. |
