Abstract | Whatever opinions journalists and foreign businessmen have matter little to the bottom line determinant of Hong Kong and China's future: public opinion. All of the scenarios given in this article fundamentally rest on judgments made by Hong Kong's own citizens, and the citizens of China, as to the desirable or tolerable future united society. Exceed the limits of tolerability, or sufficiently disappoint expectations of economic and democratic achievement, and the worst nightmares result. But reasonable attempts to meet citizens' hopes and expectations for prosperity and democracy offer prospects of Hong Kong's reunification with China laying new and stronger foundations under China and Asia's peace and prosperity. |
