| Abstract | It is a long haul and by no means a done deal. But it seems more than on the cards that it will not be too long before Hongkong follows in the footsteps of rival Singapore and sets up its Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF). The scheme will force employers and employees in the territory to contribute to accredited retirement savings programmes, and could add an extra HK$20 billion or HK$40 billion to the pension fund management business in Hongkong each year. This is at least double the current HK$10 billion in annual contributions and would be equivalent to about 4% of Hongkong's GDP. |
