| Abstract | Derivatives are hazardous and should be handled with care. These financial instruments derive their value from an underlying product, such as options to buy or sell a share at a future date, and interest rate swaps. But even the financial experts are unclear about the workings of derivatives - those who know most are the few salesmen who push them. Warnings have been plastered over them since the first sharp minds wound up the gearing on institutional gambling, but they were rarely heeded until Barings raised fears among wide-boy traders and their bosses the world over. |
