AbstractHangzhou became the world's largest urban concentration. It was in a time of war and adversity that Hangzhou flourished. Although Hangzhou lost its imperial status when the Southern Song dynasty was overthrown by the Mongols in 1279, it remained a prosperous city with many of its cultured residents still enjoying alife of luxury and leisure.
