| Abstract | Macau is many things to many people. To "hardened" Hongkong residents, the tiny Portuguese colony is a sleepy backwater that stands no comparison to its brash neighbour. To others, the casinos, dog-track and racecourse that together account for 40 per cent of the Macanese gross domestic product make it a gamblers' paradise. But perhaps even more striking than Macau's ambitious new dynamism is the fact that it has been sparked by the impending return to Chinese sovereignty - the factor that has proved so disruptive in Hongkong. |
