AbstractSome 30 billion tonnes of oil and natural gas lie under the seabed of the Nansha (Spratlys) Archipelago in the South China Sea. Although oil is now known to exist in large quantities in the region there had not been any overall assessment by any country despite a comprehensive series of surveys - until early September 1994 announcement by China. And the potential, if China's assessment is close to reality, is phenomenal. It surpasses any known oil region in the world.
