AbstractJapanese screens and lacquer sculpture are the subjects of Hongkong Land's latest exhibition in The Rotunda in Exchange Square. Each of the five contemporary lacquer artists, namely Nubuo Hiramatsu, Tsukasa Kofushiwaki, Reiko Ogino, Sakurako Matsushima and Miyuki Yoshida, featured uses this ancient medium in a highly innovative way, while the one American artist, Allan West, paints Japanese screens with a contemporary feel, though he draws his inspiration from the paintings of the Momoyama period (1573-1616). All the works exhibited display a fresh apporach, new forms and textures taking precedence over those conceived in past centuries. Nevertheless, they remain rooted in Japanese taste, with innately Japanese feeling and style.
