AbstractThe worst floods since 1991 have hit China over the past two weeks, causing property damages running to billions of dollars, other economic losses and killing 700 people. Thousands of houses in six provinces of South China were inundated, paddies destroyed and power and communications systems disrupted following persistent torential rains that raised the water levels of the Xijiang and Beijiang rivers which meet in the fertile and prosperous Pearl River Delta of Guangdong.
