| Abstract | Coal gas, or coal-bed methane as it is scientifically called, is exactly bane and boon in one. While notorious as the cause of coal-pit explosions, it can be tapped into a clean fuel, as good as natural gas which is also basically methane. Under China's current ninth five-year plan, coal-bed methane will be turned into a new source of energy in the 21st century. By 2000, the annual output should have grown to 10 billion cubic metres. |
