| Abstract | A book review of "Real China" authored by John Gittings. Unlike some of the more rambling travelogues that fill the shelves, this book has a tight geographical framework. Gittings followed the Second North-South Trunk Line, the railway that runs west of the familiar Beijing-Guangzhou line of the 1930s, through some of China's poorest provinces, which (like the railway line) remain largely unknown to the outside world and, indeed, to most urban Chinese. |
