AbstractThe first three chapters of this book set the current concerns about emigration in their historical context. The next chapter looks at the post war period when America, Canada and Australia liberalised their immigration policies and more educated and skilled emigrants joined the outflow, particularly after the 1967 riots. The following chapter looks at the difficulties in interpreting the statistics published in Hong Kong and the receiving countries, particularly the problem of estimating the number of emigrants who return to Hong Kong either temporarily or permanently. The remaining five chapters are the core of the book. They analyse from every possible angle the results of a random survey of 1595 households carried out in 1991.
