| Abstract | A current controversy - which the South China Morning Post described as a crossing of the Rubicon - has grown out of an interview Patten gave to Newsweek magazine while "on tour" in the US. He had accused the local business community of "betraying" the territory to China. True or not, the alleged accusation was enough to galvanize an unusually broad spectrum of business types who are normally silent on the subject of politics into making a vitriolic response. |
