| Abstract | Should Hong Kong satisfy itself with only manufacturing support - or keep its hand in manufacturing proper? That is one of a host of questions a team from Boston's Massachusetts Institute of Technology will be trying to sort out between now and next May 1997 when its $17 million study, Made by Hong Kong, is scheduled for completion. That report is supposed to set out industrial options, much in the spirit of earlier restructuring studies, like one in the early 1980s that urged an upgrading of Hong Kong's skills base; among other things, that report gave birth to the Vocational Training Coucil. Another Industry Department-commissioned study issued in 1995 set out a plan that would turn the territory into a software development centre. |
