Abstract | Hong Kong was founded as a port for the China trade, and it is in that entrepot role that it has prospered and developed for most of its history. Now, with the Pearl River Delta becoming the fastest industrialising area in the world, our port's role is taking on an even greater significance. Industry cannot flourish unless factories receive a regular flow of raw materials and can quickly send their finished products to market. At the moment, and for some years to come industry in southern China, and well beyond, will have to ship to and from Hong Kong. That is why Hong Kong people are planning one of the biggest port development projects in the world, on Lantau. |
