AbstractIs something stirring in Chinese politics? Until his release last week, Bao Tong was one of China's most important political prisoners. He was the right-hand man of Zhao Ziyang, the liberal Communist Party chief who was sacked on the eve of the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown. Bao was sentenced to seven years in jail for inciting counter-revolutionary activities and divulging state secrets.
