AbstractJust three months ago, Taiwan stocks were on a slippery slope. With China lobbing missiles near the island, punters were selling stocks and hoarding U.S. dollars and gold. The Taipei bourse has surged and surged. On April 29, the Taiwan Weighted Index touched 6,183 - up a third from 1996's low - and analysts expected more advances as the May 20 presidential inauguration neared.
