AbstractWashington is threatening China with trade sanctions for not adequately protecting intellectual property rights (IPR). Beijing promises to retaliate. IPR is just one ingredient in the alphabet soup of trade disputes between Beijing and Washington. In May, U.S. President Bill Clinton said he planned to unconditionally renew China's most favored nation (MFN), trade status. But the issue is likely to raise temperatures in Washington as Congress debates the decision. And even if IPR and MFN get resolved in June, the acronym WTO is almost sure to cause new friction before the year is up. America has been the main impediment to China's entry into the World Trade Organization.
