| Abstract | This survey documented that in ambulatory elderly subjects in Hong Kong, approximately 10% had already been diagnosed as having diabetes mellitus (DM). Screening revealed a further 5% who had DM and were asymptomatic for their disease. The prevalence of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) was approximately 15% in the 60- to 80-year age group and was more than 17% in those older than 80 years. This is a common disease in the elderly and is associated with significant cardiovascular morbidity. |
