| Abstract | Businesses and entrepreneurs are rushing into the world of electronic commerce faster than a starship going into warp. Futurists, the media and analysts are predicting meteoric growth over the next five years-and beyond. But what is 'electronic commerce' and where is Mankind going with it? To some electronic commerce means smart cards - cards with microchips that perform many functions such as photo ID, door key, ATM and credit cards. But to most people, 'electronic commerce' is a catch-all term for doing business on-line and this means the Internet and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). But while EDI in Hong Kong has only now started to take off after years of talk and no tangible offering, the Internet has simply exploded. |
