Abstract | AT&T, a big supplier of telecom equipment and services, comes surprisingly late to China. It opened its first office in Beijing in 1985, and took its first order of network switch equipment the following year, then it formed its first joint venture in 1990, AT&T of Shanghai. By standards of AT&T activities, Paris-based Alcatel is huge. Its installed telephone switches now account for 20 million telephone lines, stretched across 30 provinces and municipalities in China. But both companies expanded their horizons dramatically in a time of epochal change for corporations. |
