| Abstract | With its proliferation of old colonial mansions, it could be 19th century Europe, perhaps Italy or Spain - were it not for the fact it is the South China Sea, and not the Mediterranean, that surrounds the island. The Europeans who built their palatial houses on the tiny isle of Gulangyu in coastal Fujian province, have long gone and the dilapidated mansions are now homes, schools and offices. |
