AbstractIntegrating disabled people in the community has been adopted by the Hong Kong Government as a fundamental policy objective. This policy objective, however, has been adversely affected by demographic changes in the family, which result in a diminishing family capacity to care and decreasing support network size. Furthermore the development of this policy objective is not adequately informed by research studies on the dynamics of care giving in the family. The present study attempts to identify factors that are predictive of the following characteristics of the care giver, which would affect the quality of care: stress, psychological well-being, general mental health condition, and preference for institutional placement for the care recipient.
