| Abstract | In November 1995, student volunteers from Beijing Normal University have launched a training course for "farmer-labourers" in Beijing. The term farmer-labourer refers to people who have come from the countryside to work in the city - not necessarily at physical labour. And it is this group of modern- day transients who make up what the world has come to know as China's floating population. |
