AbstractDrawn by the prospect of high wages in the "bubble" economy, Chinese began arriving Japan by the tens of thousands. And an increasing number of Chinese women have come to marry Japanese men. Aside from the Chinatown in Yokohama, there is no definable Chinese community around Tokyo. But many congregate in the Shinjuku district, home to the entertainment industry and its jobs. The area also draws Chinese criminals, who are beginning to make inroads into activities like prostitution, traditionally controlled by the yakuza. Most Japanese probably don't realize that these triads come from Taiwan, not the mainland.
