| Abstract | The advantages to Rome of such a reconciliation in China are obvious. It would allow the Catholic church again to become an active player in what may be the most fertile area for Christian evangelism on the planet. Beijing also stands to reap gains. A severance of ties by the Vatican with Taiwan in favor of China would be a major diplomatic victory, especially at a time when Taipei is campaigning aggressively for international recognition. |
