Abstract | A growing number of Chinese-language newspapers and magazines can be found in Australia. Latest to enter the Chinese fray is the Taiwan-linked Independence Daily. Three other Chinese dailies: Hong Kong-owned leader Sing Tao Jih Pao, the Chinese Herald, run by Chinese from Taiwan, and the Australian Chinese Daily, held by a local group from Hong Kong. Together they boast an average daily circulation of 56,000, serving Sydney's 115,000 Chinese speakers and a national total of 300,000. Yet the publishers complain that mainstream advertisers have been slow to tap the potential for reaching affluent Asian readers. |
