| Abstract | Although originally mooted by Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s to resolve the Hong Kong issue in negotiations with the British Government, it was intended from the very beginning that the one country, two systems concept would also serve as the framework to eventually bring Taiwan back to China's fold. No doubt, the future capitalist system in Taiwan will enjoy a much higher degree of autonomy than the special administrative region projected for Hong Kong. This is because of the very different historical and international circumstances which led to the widely acknowledged runaway province of Taiwan. |
