AbstractOil money, instead of death, is in people's minds when they enter the forbidding desert, Taklimakan. A 520km asphalt highway, which was opened to traffic in early October 1995, runs between Luntai county on the northern edge of the desert and Minfeng county on its southern edge. Oil money is expected to flow out of the "Sea of Death" along the desert highway, financing further oil development in the vast desert and fuelling economic growth in Xinjiang and the rest of the country.
