AbstractWhich makes the upcoming Year of the Rat more prone to forecasts than resolutions. This year the predictions are big: they go well beyond the game of guessing when the austerity reforms will ease; they point to major shift in China's economic direction as it manoeuvres not only to facilitate entry into the World Trade Organization, but wrests economic growth from the flamboyant engineers of the economic boom cities along China's southeast coast. Still, the first question on many lips is a simple one: will China ease credit after a two-year crunch, allowing listed firms to finance expansions that will add some fizz to their flat profits?
