Article TitleOut on a limb : how Taiwan's President can restore the peace with China.
Is Part OfAsiaweek ; v.22, no.8, 23 Feb 1996, p.17, +1p., illus.
AbstractTaiwan's President Lee Teng-hui's "private" visit to the United States last year pushed the Chinese leadership, normally cautious from the uncertainties of political and economic transition, into adopting a bully's pose by threathening to attack Taiwan. Now he has manipulated another giant, the U.S. itself, into taking a step toward defending the island should China actually do so. Indeed, the man many dismissed as a political neophyte when he succeeded to the presidency on the death of Chiang Ching-kuo in 1988 is turning out to be a grand master.
