Article TitleOn prime time : China should have debated Wei Jingsheng, not jailed him.
Is Part OfAsiaweek ; v.22, no.1, 5 Jan 1996, p.21, illus.
AbstractAmid the international outcry over China's jailing of Mr. Wei Jingsheng, we'd like to chime in with some finger-wagging of our own. Rather than prosecute him, why didn't Beijing just challenge the star dissident to globally televised debate with a suitably articulate representative of its own - say, Trade Minister Wu Yi? Neanderthals in the hierarchy may think it beneath them to answer Mr. Wei's charges on prime time. But to do so would certainly have served China's interests - and its international image - well. Besides, a CNN-BBC bid for telecast right would have helped bail out some ailing state firms.
