| Abstract | A huge increase in the labour force, combined with the continued economic slowdown suggests Hong Kong's 11-year high of 3.6 per cent unemployment is unlikely to improve soon. And despite evidence that the relatively high number of jobless is not due to long-term structural economic problems, a mismatch between labour skills and job vacancies is likely to mean those laid off from the manufacturing sector will remain out of work longer than has been the norm. |
