| Abstract | Champagne corks were popping at New Party headquarters in Taipei on Dec. 2. Founded two years ago by seven breakaway members of the ruling Kuomintang, the party was competing for the first time in Legislative Yuan elections. It managed to triple its haul of seats to 21 and took 13% of the vote, nearly twice its tally in last year's mayoral and gubernatorial polls. Proclaimed secretary general Jaw Shau-kong: "We have truly stood up and become [Taiwan's]third political party." |
