| Abstract | In July 1995, the People's Bank of China invited five foreign banks to upgrade their representative offices to branch status in Beijing. The Bank of Tokyo recently became the first foreign bank to open a branch in the capital since 1949, and it was swiftly followed by Hongkong Bank. This week, Citibank opened its branch, and Nanyang Commercial Bank is expected to join the elite group by the end of this year. |
