Abstract | Shameen developed as a foreign enclave with its own commercial, social, and cultural life, most of its building constructed in Western style. Two churches, Anglican and Catholic, were built to serve the religious needs of Shameen's foreign community, the former is seen on the left in this photograph. Shameen remained a foreign settlement until World War II. |
