| Abstract | China submitted an application to join General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1986 and, since then, discussions have centred around the terms of China's membership under the Protocol of Accession. The terms, or trade and economic issues involved, are wide-ranging, but the most important of these is the two sides' different perception of China's position in the global trade and economic order. |
