| Abstract | Under totalitarian rule for hundreds of years, the Chinese are clamoring for consumer goods from abroad, particularly food, child related products, personal-care items, cellular phones, and athletic shoes. Although official statistics indicate the average Chinese income is about US$370 per year, this figure is widely acknowledged to understate real earnings and buying power, especially in the cities. |
